Mondo Duplantis opens up about breaking the world record at the Paris Olympics
Mondo Duplants delivered a staunch performance in the pole vault event at the Paris Olympics, where he broke the world record for the ninth time. He surpassed his own mark of 6.24m which he set in the Xiamen Diamond League in April 2024. After reaching the mark of 6.25m in the 2024 Summer Games, the 24-year-old spoke to the media and opened up about the win.
He said it was an incredible experience for him, and he couldn't process it (as quoted by Olympics.com).
"I haven’t processed how fantastic that moment was," said Mondod Duplantis. "It’s one of those things that don’t really feel real, such an out-of-body experience. It’s still hard to kind of land right now."
"What can I say? I just broke a world record at the Olympics, the biggest possible stage for a pole vaulter. My biggest dream since a kid was to break the world record at the Olympics, and I’ve been able to do that in front of the most ridiculous crowd I’ve ever competed in front of.”
He also spoke about the crowd and said that it felt like an American football game.
"I tried to clear my thoughts as much as I could. The crowd was going crazy. It was so loud in there, it sounded like an American football game. I have a little bit of experience being in a 100,000-capacity stadium, but I was never the centre of attention."
Mondo Duplantis will next be seen competing at the Lausanne Diamond League 2024, which is slated for August 22, 2024.
