Shaun White has announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend and Canadian actress Nina Dobrev after four years of dating. The couple got engaged in a romantic ceremony in New York City much to the surprise of Dobrev, who thought she had come for a Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour.
White and Dobrev first crossed paths briefly at an awards show in 2012. A more formal meeting in 2019 led to a dinner, and the couple began their official relationship during the filming of Dobrev's movie, "Redeeming Love," where she invited White to join her.
"That was actually how we kind of started our relationship. And she [thought], 'Oh, this guy, he came to play. He's serious.' So that's a thing that we share together. We both enjoy traveling," White told US Weekly
The couple officially started dating in April 2020 and four years later, they are on the verge of saying 'I do'. White pulled off a romantic surprise proposal, inviting Dobrev to a fake Vogue dinner at the Golden Swan restaurant in New York City. When she arrived, she was stunned to find White waiting, dressed in a black Ralph Lauren suit, with a photographer capturing the moment.
“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” she said of her reaction on entering the room (via Vogue)
Dobrev was also wearing black and eventually said yes before their close friends joined in the celebration.
Vogue noted that the couple were engaged for a few days ago and only decided to make it public on Wednesday, October 30.
Shaun White was surprised to see Nina Dobrev's fan following in their first meeting
Shaun White is one of the greatest snowboarders in history but when he met his girlfriend Nina Dobrev in 2019, people were asking her for selfies and not the three-time Olympic champion.
"I actually didn't know anything about her," he told People in 2020.
However, when they went into a restaurant for dinner, the waiter asked for a photo with Dobrev, which surprised White.
"And I was like, 'What's happening? What's going on?' It was actually really funny," he recalled.
Dobrev was part of The Vampire Diaries, which was a global hit. She has also worked in Lucky Day, Run This Town, and The Final Girls, among other films.
