Two-time Olympian Simone Biles and the reigning all-around Olympic champion Suni Lee shared a lighthearted moment during their participation at the recently concluded US Olympic trials. Photos from their mat-side interaction went viral as they headed to the Paris Olympics.
Biles and Lee have been two of the most consistent performers for the United States over the last few years. While the former has reached the pinnacle of gymnastics success with seven Olympic medals, 23 World Championship titles, and numerous other records and accolades, Lee has also paved her way to the top, winning six Olympic and World Championship medals.
Biles has represented the US twice at the Summer Games, while Lee has participated in one. The duo has now qualified for yet another Olympic event in Paris, kicking off in ten days. At the June trials held at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota Biles finished at the top with an all-around score of 117.225, while 21-year-old Lee placed second with 111.675 in front of her hometown crowd.
Although the trials have already come to an end and the US gymnastics team for the Paris Olympics has been finalized, a particular moment from the trials featuring Biles and Lee has captured the attention of fans. Pictures of their off-court conversation are making the rounds on X (formerly Twitter). In the stills shared by USA Gymnastics on their account, Biles can be seen conversing with Lee.
"It's not every day you get to see two Olympic All-Around Champions preparing to head back to the Games," USA Gymnastics wrote in the caption.
Simone Biles talks about supporting Suni Lee during her routines at the US Gymnastics Championships
Simone Biles won her record-extending ninth national title at the 2024 US Gymnastics Championships in June following a first-place finish, scoring 119.750 in the all-around event. In contrast, Suni Lee finished fourth with a score of 110.650.
However, when Lee was performing her vault routines, Biles went to cheer her up after, as she knew her compatriot needed the support. Talking about which she stated (via USA Today):
"After Suni vaulted, I knew exactly what was going through her head. I dealt with that in Tokyo. So I just knew that she needed some encouragement and somebody to trust her gymnastics for her and to believe in her. So that's exactly what I did."
Lee later acknowledged Biles' support, noting how nice it was to have her in her corner and expressing gratitude for the latter's encouragement.
