Simone Biles had a phenomenal season in 2024, re-establishing her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all-time. For her achievements, the American was honoured with Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year award, and she recently shared snaps of her time at the award ceremony.
Biles' 2024 season marked her widely awaited comeback to the Olympic stage. Four years ago, at the Tokyo Games, the gymnast struggled with mental health issues that forced her to pull out of multiple event finals. In Paris last year, the 27-year-old returned to the biggest competition stage and banished all doubts about her greatness, winning three gold and one silver medal.
On January 2, Simone Biles was named SI’s Sportsperson of the Year. The award ceremony was held on January 7 in Las Vegas, and the gymnast donned a gorgeous sparkly mini-dress for the occasion. Recently, she shared snaps of her time at the award ceremony, posing with her loved ones, including her husband Jonathan Owens, her sister Adria Biles, and her 2016 Olympic teammate Aly Raisman. Biles captioned the photos,
“A night to remember.”
Simone Biles reflects on her career as she accepts the Sportsperson of the Year award
Simone Biles has led a legendary career in the gym. Starting from 2013, the American has been unbeaten in her all-around competitions for more than a decade now, a streak which she kept alive in 2024.
Last year, the gymnast made her season debut on the domestic circuit, winning the US Classic, US National Championships, and the US Olympic Trials. She then went on to compete at the Paris Olympics, where she won gold in the team, all-around and vault events, and finished second on the floor.
Reflecting on her career in her Sportsperson of the Year speech, Biles said,
“When I started doing gymnastics when I was six, I never imagined winning medals and everything I've been fortunate enough to do up until this point. I just wanted to have fun and hopefully get a college scholarship. I've kind of surpassed all of that which is super exciting, but every day I spend competing alongside my teammates is truly a gift.”
She went on to encourage little kids to follow their passion, saying,
“To all the little ones out there, stay engaged and stay active. Because lessons learned through individual or team sports are something you can carry on through the rest of your lives no matter what life may throw at you along your journey. Be the best person you can be, follow your passion, and put in the work and you know that I see the gold within all of you.”
With hercampaign at the Paris Olympics, Simone Biles solidified her status as the most decorated gymnast of all-time, having won 31 World Championships and 11 Olympic medals. After the 2024 Games, Biles also became the most successful American Olympic gymnast.
