Anna DeBeer shared with 502 Circle Athletes Kasean Pryor and Noah Waterman on Keep It 100 (via Floyd Street Media) how her journey with volleyball began. She opened up on how she earlier loved doing gymnastics but later transitioned to volleyball, adding (4:31):

“I really played a ton of different sports when I was young. Gymnastics was like my main sport. As a child, I loved it. But, I had a pretty serious injury in gymnastics and that's kind of what led me into volleyball.’”

However, after undergoing surgery, DeBeer reconsidered continuing with gymnastics, one of the reasons being her growing height. She further mentioned:

“It's kind of like a weird story. I had an overuse injury from like all the flips and like all the stuff we used to do. I had to have a surgery. They basically said I could go back to gymnastics. But, at that time, I was just like, ‘I don't really know.'”
“I was getting kind of tall and normally you're like supposed to be like short, you know, like Simone Biles. So, I was like, you know, ‘Maybe I should try something else.’ My dad was like, ‘You should try volleyball.’ I was like, ‘Okay, I'll go back to that.’ That's literally how I started playing in like sixth grade.”

DeBeer previously was a college player for Louisville Cardinals volleyball after an impressive NCAA career in the sport, where she played a key role in their run to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship finals, despite missing the final due to an injury sustained in the semis.
