Noah Lyles made his first appearance on the popular Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy Fallon. The Olympic medalist explained to the NBC host what it means to be the fastest man in the world, a title he claimed after the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
Lyles, who was pitted to fill the gap left by Usain Bolt's retirement, delivered highly impressive performances at the World Championships last year. He became the first man since Bolt to win the sprint double in 2015, clinching both the 100m and 200m golds, while also claiming a gold in the 4x100m relay win by Team USA.
Lyles finished the sprint in 10.83s to win the 100m gold. It stands as the fastest time of his career and the fastest in the world in 2023. The 26-year-old ran the 200m in a blistering 19.51s to beat silver medalist Erriyon Knighton by a huge margin of 0.24s.
The world champion is now aiming to defend both his records at the 2024 Paris Olympics. As he gears up for the Olympic Trials, Lyles debuted on NBC's Jimmy Fallon-led Tonight Show and spoke about his ‘fastest man in the world’ title.
“It feels very good.”
Lyles noted how fast he was in terms of the speed limits for cars on public roads.
“I would say 26 miles per hour. If I ran in the school zone, I would get a ticket.”
The 26-year-old clarified that he doesn't run 26 miles per hour for the whole 100m distance. Rather, it is the top speed he attained during his sprint when he won the 100m gold at the World Championships. He also explained to Jimmy Fallon the secret behind his fast pace.
“I'm putting more than three hundred pounds of force into the blocks.”
Is Noah Lyles the fastest man in the world in 2024?
No, Noah Lyles is not the fastest man in the world in 2024. He held the title in 2023 when he ran the 100m in 10.83s and no other sprinter ran faster. However, this year, he is the second fastest man in the world, even after his blistering 9.85s run in the 100m at the Racers Grand Prix.
Despite being just 0.02 seconds shy of his personal best, Lyles still placed second in the 100m at the tournament. He was stunned by a brisk start from Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who stormed to his own personal best of 10.82s to win the race. The Jamaican also became the fastest man in the world in 2024 with his victory.
In the 200m category, Noah Lyles is the second fastest sprinter in history behind Usain Bolt. He raced his first 200m of the year at the 2024 NYC Grand Prix on Sunday and clocked a time of 19.77s to claim victory.
