Mikaela Shiffrin, the most successful skier of all-time, has been in the hunt for the elusive 100th World Cup win, a feat no one else has achieved. In her race to the milestone, the American suffered a crash during the Killington World Cup, and had to subsequently undergo surgery for a puncture wound she suffered in the accident. Recently, the skier opened up about the aftermath of her surgery, and the potential timeline of the return to action.
Shiffrin began the 2024-2025 season having already won 97 World Cup races. Her first race of the season was in Austria, where she finished sixth. However, she soon got back to her winning ways, finishing on top of the podium in Levi and later in Gurgl to claim her 98th and 99th World Cup wins, respectively.
She arrived in Killington in November in hopes of claiming her 100th victory, but suffered a major crash in her second run of the giant slalom. The crash resulted in a puncture wound in the skier’s abdomen, and in December she underwent surgery for the same. She has since been out of action, and recently gave fans an update about her potential return to the World Cup circuit.
In an episode of ‘Moving Right Along’ on her YouTube channel, Shiffrin said,
“Right now I (am) just kind of supposed to lay low a little bit for the sort of initial healing to happen after the surgery. Just a little bit of time to think I guess. And it just kind of delays things and it's hard to put a timeline. I feel like people want to know, but it's hard to know if or when I'll be back this season.”
Mikaela Shiffrin opens up about how her fiancé Alexander Kilde helps her deal with her injury
While Mikaela Shiffrin has been dealing with the fallout of her horror crash in Killington, she has found support in her fiancé Alexander Kilde. Kilde, a skier himself, underwent a terrible crash of his own in 2023, and is yet to return to racing.
Speaking in the same episode of ‘Moving Right Along' Shiffrin revealed that she was struggling to deal with the uncertainties, but Kilde was able to make her laugh regardless of the circumstances.
“It is what it is. It's just all of the unknowns that are a little bit tough and it's always been that way. They're (always) there and they have been there and for whatever reason today that's bothering me more than it has the last few days. But if you can't laugh you cry and for me right now when I laugh, I cry, so I'm not doing either. But he (Kilde) makes me laugh all of the time.”
Mikaela Shiffrin and Alexander Kilde began dating in 2021, and got engaged in April 2024. The couple is vocal about their support for one another and often share updates about their daily lives with fans.
