Jordan Chiles wishes to work her 'Black Girl Magic' and pave a path for the younger generations to follow. She is heading to the second consecutive Olympiad of her career after finishing third with 111.425 at the 2024 US Gymnastic Trials.
Jordan Chiles and the US team clinched the team silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the wake of her compatriot Simone Biles' withdrawal due to 'twisties'. Now, both the WCC gymnasts have taken off on a 'redemption tour' to bring the team gold and sweep individual titles along with the other US team girls.
Growing up, Chiles didn't see a lot of Black gymnasts as her schooling was in a predominantly white environment. As life progressed, Chiles had to navigate through the realities of being Black and embrace her beauty and identity.
"I went to a predominantly white school growing up, so I was a typical Black girl thinking she was white. I had to be able to figure out how to embrace myself and my beauty," said Jordan (via Harpers Bazaar).
In a recent interview with the Players' Tribune, Jordan Chiles talked about forging the path for the next generation so that they don't have to navigate as she and her fellow Black athletes did.
"It's black girl magic, that's how I see it. I'd rather do the hard work so they can just wake up in the morning and walk into whatever sport they need to and being like, okay, I'm good. Like, I can feel comfortable. I feel confident."
She further named some Black athletes, including Simone Biles, Dominique Dawes, Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, who dominate the sport and inspire the world with their success stories.
"Simone or Dominique Dodge, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, whoever it is, they've already done that work for them. I'm in her life right now. When you see yourself in somebody else and somebody else can see themselves in you, like, I think it only makes you feel, wow, like, I've done something in this world."
Jordan Chiles on her Olympic goals - "A great Olympics looks like me going out hitting a four for four"
Jordan Chiles competed in all the routines in the Tokyo Olympic tune-up, which made her the only gymnast to achieve that in 2020-21. She wishes to unfurl that prowess on the Paris Olympic mat as well, which according to her, is the definition of a 'great Olympics'.
"A great Olympics looks like me going out hitting a four for four. So all four events, being consistent and just having fun. I'm all about having fun. I think that's the biggest thing that I've accomplished within my career is knowing that my sport doesn't have to be strict," she said. (via Bet)
Jordan Chiles will accompany Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Olympic debutant Hezyl Rivera to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
