Simone Biles once proudly said that her diamond engagement ring surpassed her Olympic gold medals. Biles and her NFL safety husband Jonathan Owens dated for two years before getting engaged on the day after Valentine's Day in 2022.
Biles and Owens first met on the dating app Raya in 2020, after the former approached the NFL player. In 2021, they celebrated their first anniversary on social media, as Biles was occupied with the Olympic Games that year.
On February 15, 2022, the athletic couple got engaged in a dreamy setting in a gazebo in Houston, Texas. Owens proposed with a sparkling oval-cut diamond ring designed by Houston-based jeweler ZoFrost. This ring quickly became Biles' most prized possession, even surpassing her Olympic gold medals.
"It's definitely my most prized possession now and I'm always wearing it. ... It definitely beats a gold medal," the 27-year-old said in an exclusive interview with Today. (February 18, 2022)
She further expressed how surprised she was when Owens pulled off the proposal.
"I thought it might happen this year, but definitely not on Valentine's Day. So that's why it was such a shock. The way he set everything up was just so seamless."
The 30-time World medalist also shared a carousel of her engagement pictures on her Instagram handle.
"THE EASIEST YES. I can’t wait to spend forever & ever with you, you’re everything I dreamed of and more! let’s get married FIANCÉ," Biles wrote.
The couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony at the Harris County Courthouse in Houston in April 2023. The following month, on May 6, they got socially married in the presence of 144 guests in Cabo. Mexico.
Simone Biles talked about how Jonathan Owens was her strongest support system after the Tokyo Olympic heartbreak
When Biles pulled out of the 2021 Olympic Games, she was already dating Owens. In her eponymous docuseries on Netlfix, the 11-time Olympic medalist recalled how Owens kept a check on her after the quadrennial event and ensured that she didn't miss gymnastics training. She said:
"Post Tokyo, Jonathan was just like, I mean, he always has a good head on his shoulders, and he's like, 'You'll get back to where you were,' and made sure I was staying on top of my training."
She also noted how her husband motivated her for therapy sessions amid her mental health struggles in 2021, saying:
"He was making sure I was going to my therapy sessions and was trying to do as much as he could, without kind of being bossy, but he was really just like a shoulder to lean on because he saw like those dark times after Tokyo."
Biles and Owens have been building a new home in Texas since early 2023. They often meet and share updates of their new abode on their social media handles.
