Noah Lyles and Junelle Bromfield are a power couple in the track and field world, but as of late, Bromfield has been on the receiving end of some intense criticism from Jamaican track and field fans for comments made by her boyfriend. Recently, the runner opened up about her initial reaction to the comments Lyles made, and how a ‘cultural difference’ may have led to the escalation of the entire ordeal.

Both Lyles and Bromfield are fairly public about their relationship. The couple often shares photos of their daily life with fans on social media, and are regularly seen cheering for each other at competitions. Before the Paris Olympics, Lyles appeared on the Track World News podcast, where he discussed his relationship with his girlfriend, saying he ‘knows information that other people don't’ when it came to Jamaica's track scene.

The comments went viral, with many fans dubbing Junelle Bromfield a ‘traitor’ among other things. In an interview with Simone Clarke on 'Sim Soul Sessions', the Jamaican revealed her initial reaction to the controversy. She said that a friend urged her to check X (formerly Twitter), and found that she was being lambasted on the platform.

“I checked Twitter and they're like oh Junelle is a Judas because she’s telling Noah all of Jamaica's business. I (woke) Noah because it was late at night and I was like ‘Noah what did you say on the podcast’ and he was like ‘I didn't say anything bad on the podcast about anybody’. So I was like let me go watch it and I watched it and I (felt) this is going to blow over,” she said (at 10:18).

Bromfield went on to add that she had to explain to an apologetic Noah Lyles the difference in culture, and how certain people would read too much into his comments.

“At the time Noah was asking what he could do and he apologized. I was like it's a difference in culture and some people might take it away but it will blow over. That's what I thought personally, because to me (he) didn't say anything bad about anybody so I thought it's going to blow over but it did not.”

In her appearance on ‘Sim Soul Sessions', Junelle Bromfield narrated her experience with the extreme hate she faced on the internet following her boyfriend's comments. While Noah Lyles wasn't a part of the interview, the sprinter was there backstage and admitted getting teary-eyed as he heard Bromfield speak.

In an interaction with the show's host, Simone Clarke, Lyles was asked where he disappeared to in the middle of the interview, to which Bromfield playfully replied that he went to cry. The American confirmed this, saying,

“I did, I did cry.”

Noah Lyles has always been outspoken in his support for his girlfriend. After the hate Bromfield received on the internet, the Olympic champion even made a post on Instagram, writing a lengthy note where he called her ‘incredible' and shared how he watched her brave through the difficulties of her life.
