The IOC has recently announced their decision to allow two boxers who have previously failed gender eligibility test to compete at the Paris Olympics. The decision caused an uproar on social media, with many fans speaking out against the organization.
At the 2023 Boxing World Championships, Algeria’s Imane Khelif was disqualified from the competition hours before her gold-medal match over high testosterone levels. Similarly, Taiwan’s double world champion in the featherweight category, Lin Yu-ting, was also stripped of her bronze medal at the same event over a ‘biochemical test for gender eligibility’.
The boxers were excluded from the world events by International Boxing Federation. However, the organization was later banned from running the boxing Olympic tournament over governance issues. The boxing tournament in Paris is currently run by IOC's Boxing Unit, which has less stringent rules.
Both the boxers have recently been cleared to compete at the Paris Olympics by the IOC's Boxing Unit, sparking outrage over the internet. A user shared the an old video of Imane Khelif's bout, where she dominates her opponent, and questioned her participation in Olympics.
"Beating women is now a spectator sport We have never been more aware as a society of male violence against women Why are the #Olympics allowing this male to enter the boxing ring with a woman?," they wrote.
Reacting to this, one fan called the ordeal a disgrace, writing:
“It's a disgrace, these women are being cheated. It's no different from someone using performance enhancing drugs…”
One fan called it yet another reason they won’t be tuning in to the Paris Olympics, writing:
“Another reason not to watch the Olympics”
Here is how other fans reacted to the IOC allowing Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting to compete at the Games:
“It's the women's fault. Every woman could simply refuse to fight until this dude is disqualified. And I don't mean just his competitors, EVERY female boxer/fighter in the Olympics. No competition, no money for the hosts and they could not afford that, so they would fix it,” one X user commented.
“At one point, women competitors must say enough is enough and boycott,” another chimed in.
“Incredibly sad as well as dangerous. Does somebody need to die to change this nonsense?” a fan asked.
“She trained, fought - made it to the Olympics. Thought she had a chance at a medal. Then they make her fight a man. Shame,” a fourth X user wrote.
When will Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting compete at the Paris Olympics?
Despite the social media outrage, both Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting will be competing at the Paris Olympics. Khelif will be taking on Italy's Angela Carini for their round of 16 encounter in the 66 KG category. The bout is scheduled for August 1, 6:20 AM ET.
Meanwhile, Yu-ting will be competing in the women's 57 kg event. She will be in action on August 2 at 9:30 AM ET as she faces off against Sitora Turdibekova.
