While celebrating his Zurich Diamond League victory, Grant Holloway recently drew a striking parallel with the legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. He recorded a stunning sub-13 time to earn the top place at the Letzigrund Stadium in Switzerland on Thursday, September 5.
At the Zurich Diamond League, Holloway registered the 12th sub-13 110m hurdles race of his career, the most for anyone in history. In Zurich, he posted a breathtaking time of 12.99 seconds to earn the lead over Sasha Zhoya's 13:10 seconds and Freddie Crittenden's 13:15 seconds.
Reflecting on his stunning performances throughout the season, Grant Holloway drew comparisons with Michael Jordan, expressing a sense of achievement after drawing inspiration from the NBA superstar.
"It's like watching Michael Jordan in a sense you're always like I want to be like that but then you start training, practicing, working hard. You surround yourself with a team. I got there," he said (via CITIUS Mag's Youtube channel). (at 2:20)
"You got to have the day. Got to make sure the stars align. You have got to have a little bit of luck on your side but tonight man, I'm just I'm happy like genuinely like happy that I was able to do that and everything's behind me now," he added.
Further, the American mentioned the impact of hurdlers like Allen Johnson and Aries Merritt, considering them the pinnacle of the sport.
"I'm speeches right now because I didn't think it could be done," Holloway said. "You look at someone like Allen Johnson Aries Merritt like they were the pinnacle and like coming up in the sport. I never thought I could be what they did."
Grant Holloway equals his Olympic winning time at the Zurich Diamond League
Grant Holloway equaled his Paris Olympics gold medal-winning time at the 2024 Zurich Diamond League.
At the Paris Games too, he recorded a time of 12.99 seconds to clinch the victory over his teammate Daniel Robert and Jamaica's Rasheed Broadbell.
He recorded a few stunning sub-13 times during this season. On June 28, 2024, he posted 12.86 seconds during the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, earning the spot for the Games.
Holloway's personal best 110m hurdles time fell short with a thread-thin gap of 0.01 seconds of the world record, which he listed in Eugene in 2021.
