The two-time Olympian rugby center, Ilona Maher has made an impressive imprint in her online stature. The social media star recently opened up on how the presence sometimes overwhelms her.
Maher is soaring high after successfully completing her first try for Bristol Bears against the Exeter Chiefs. The Bears were able to defeat the Chiefs with an impressive score of 41-31. In her debut match, Ilona Maher, who clinched the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, could not make a dominant dent for the Bears.
However, against the Chiefs, she aced the try, after successfully handling two tackles. Her presence was sensational as her debut match was also shifted to accommodate a larger audience. Maher shared her thoughts on her virtual rise as well while speaking at a news conference, as reported by The Athletic (NY Times).
“I love that they (the fans) interact with me and they see me as somebody who they also can come up to. It is really cool that I’ve created that openness there. There are times when I’m like ‘please give me some space’ but other than that I really love that I am a person people feel very comfortable with.”
Ilona Maher on her love for her supporters and rugby's growth
Other than her dominance on the field, her online field has also seen growth and recognition. The support which has been shown for the athlete has been skyrocketing due to her lively and inclusive personality.
Maher, a speaker for body positivity, has also mentioned that she admires her fans and relishes her time with them. While sharing her emotional side, Maher expressed that rugby is more than just her and that the sport needs more players for better representation.
“I’ve had people in tears just because I took a selfie. Those moments mean a lot to me. And there’s so many that add up. I just hope that, again, I’m honored to be that superstar of rugby but I just feel like it’s not enough for it just to be me. We need more players (to be in the spotlight too) because I’m maybe, as I said, working my magic here (trying to help others do it). I think we need more (players to do the same) to make it even bigger.”
The Olympic athlete also participated in the 33rd season of the reality show, “Dancing with the Stars” with professional dance partner and choreographer, Alan Bersten and went home with the second-place finish. With her achievements from all corners, Ilona Maher has become one of the rising idols with prominent on and off-field achievements.
