Noah Lyles had apologized to girlfriend Junelle Bromfield following his comments on a podcast which led to severe criticism of the Jamaican sprinter from her countrymen. However, the Olympic gold medalist doesn't take the entire responsibility, claiming it was just the nature of social media.
Before the Paris Olympics, Lyles appeared on a podcast with Track World News and claimed he was updated about the Jamaican athletes. The 27-year-old also added that he knew about Kishane Thompson way before the Jamaican clocked a world lead of 9.77s, after having heard about him from Bromfield.
The clip went viral over the internet as Jamaican fans found it outrageous, even calling Bromfield a ‘traitor’. The Jamaican sprinter continues to receive hate to this date but has received unwavering support from family and friends, and boyfriend Noah Lyles.
Speaking on the podcast Sim Soul Sessions, Lyles was asked by the host whether he found himself responsible for the drama or whether he thought it was just the nature of social media. Admitting it as a part and parcel of social media, he said:
"It's no secret that I've had my share of conversations in the social space and I've been a hot topic for many months and years and unfortunately I didn't go out there with any ill intent and unfortunately I can't control how people take things."
"But the first thing I wanna make sure is that Junelle is okay with everything because that's the person whom I care about. This is the person I hope to live with for many years and that's how I see it and I hope she sees it the same way.”
The 100m Olympic champion also added that he would try to make this ‘wrong’ right as soon as possible. Earlier in the podcast, Junelle Bromfield stated that Lyles had apologized to her as his comments blew over X.
Noah Lyles pens heartfelt note for Junelle Bromfield amid online abuse
With the online hate campaign going on for over a month against Junelle Bromfield, Noah Lyles decided to speak up and throw his support behind his girlfriend following the Paris Olympics. Calling her a ‘survivor’, the 27-year-old lauded Jamaican’s ability to deal with the hate from her own nation, writing:
“I just want to say how incredibly proud I am of my GF and give her the flowers she deserves now 💐. She has been through so much in her life that I could never imagine fighting through. Beyond that she is a survivor, 2x Olympian, Olympic medalists, Multi world championship medalist, and has been representing Jamaica on the world stage since she was 8 years old.”
“But the most impressive thing I’ve seen recently is how she’s dealt with the pure disrespect and hatred towards her from her own country. This woman has been attacked by people who have never met her, heard her name before, never seen her smile, or heard what she believes in. But she keeps moving forward knowing that God will always make a way. That's why God keeps blessing her!”
The couple has concluded their respective track seasons and are currently enjoying the offseason.
