Gymnast and social media star Ian Gunther has announced his retirement from the world of gymnastics. The American recently shared the news with fans while emphasizing that he was still committed to growing gymnastics as a sport.

Gunther, a four-time NCAA champion, found fame as he posted informative videos of gymnastics online, participated in challenges, and gave fans a look into the everyday life of a gymnast. Earlier this year, he was also a part of the Simone Biles-led Gold Over America Tour.

Now, Ian Gunther has officially retired from competitive gymnastics. Taking to Instagram to share the news, he wrote,

“This isn't a goodbye, but a hello. Gymnastics has shaped my life in ways I could never have imagined. After 18 incredible years of competition, I recently wrapped up my final meet during Thanksgiving in the Czech Republic-a poetic way to conclude a career that I am so grateful for. Although I'm no longer competing, my passion for the sport remains unwavering.”
“Moving forward, I'm committed to staying even more engaged and finding new ways to give back to gymnastics and the community that has given me so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support over the years. It has truly been the opportunity of a lifetime,” he added.

As Ian Gunther announced his retirement from gymnastics, many of his fellow athletes in the sport were quick to extend their congratulations for an impressive career. Two-time Olympic champion Jade Carey wrote in the comments section of Gunther's original post,

“You’re awesome Ian.”

Khoi Young, Gunther's teammate at Stanford, wrote,

“Gonna miss you man.”

Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympian Yul Moldauer commented,

“Legendary bro.”

Ian Gunther’s gymnastics career saw him claim many accolades. He is a two-time Junior National champion in the parallel bars and pommel horse. He is also a Junior National champion on the still rings and the high bar events.

Representing Stanford University, his collegiate career saw him win four NCAA team championships. In his time with Stanford University, he was also named a 10-time NCAA All-American (2019: still rings; 2020: all-around, parallel bars, pommel horse, still rings; 2021: parallel bars, pommel horse, still rings; 2022: parallel bars, still rings). His collegiate career saw him win three MPSF Individual Championships (2021: pommel horse, still rings; 2022: still rings), as well as two MPSF team championships.
