High jumper Gianmarco Tamberi shared a heartfelt apology note to his wife after losing his wedding ring while bearing Italy's flag on the opening day of the Paris Olympics. Tamberi and Arianna Errigo were decided to be the flag bearers of the Italian delegation for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics by the Italian National Olympic Committee on April 22.
While he was performing the honors, his wedding ring slipped off his finger to the Seine. He said that initially he saw the ring fall but it eventually bounced in the wrong direction. He apologized to his wife on social media by penning a heartfelt note for her. The Olympian explained the entire scenario of how he lost the ring:
"I saw it fly... I followed her with a glance until I saw her bouncing inside the boat. A Glimmer of Hope, but unfortunarely the bounce was in the wrong direction and floating more than a thousand times in the air I saw her dive into the water like that was the only place she wanted to be."
Apologizing to his wife and adding a response, Gianmarco Tamberi further said:
"If I had to invent an apology I would never have baan this imaginative. I think there might be a huge poetic side to yesterday's misdeed, and if you want, we'll throw yours into that river, too, so they'll be together forever, and we'll have one more excuse to, like you've always asked, renew our vows and get married to new. I love you my love."
Adding an Olympic touch to his apology, the athlete said:
"May it be auspicious to come home with even bigger gold!!"
