"Jogging the last 30 meters to get 9.91 is crazy"; "How will Noah beat this in Paris?"- Fans react as Kishane Thompson secures easy 100m win

Kishane Thompson is growing in stature with each passing day. After running a world-leading 9.77 earlier at the Jamaican Olympic Trials, the 22-year-old cruised to an easy 100m win at the Gyulai István Memorial 2024. Thompson slowed down after taking a big lead by the end of 60 meters, and that has made fans excited over what he could deliver at the Paris Olympics 2024.

While Thompson rose to prominence after clocking the world lead at the Jamaican Olympic Trials, he has run impressive times since last year. His season's best from 2023 is 9.85s, 0.02s slower than the time that won Noah Lyles his maiden 100m world title.

After winning his maiden Jamaican National Championship in June, coach Stephen Francis claimed that Thompson could run 9.6s, a rarity after Usain Bolt’s era ended in 2016. He very much looks to be on track to get near that mark, running an easy 9.91s at the Gyulai István Memorial 2024.

Kishane Thompson was fastest off the blocks and through the rest of the race as well despite slowing down after the 60m mark. He looked like he was jogging the last few meters, looking around himself to keep an eye on other runners. This performance has left fans excited for the Olympics and are hyping up the Jamaican.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

"Jogging the last 30 meters to get 9.91 is crazy"
"Turbo-Go on cruise control," another fan wrote.
"Real deal Kishane Thompson," a user commented.

Several fans were also worried for Noah Lyles, who hasn't run faster than 9.83 yet in his career.

"How will Noah beat this in Paris?" a fan stated.
"I’ve suddenly worried that the US men might not medal in the 100," another fan wrote.
"We need a final with Kishane,Tebogo, Bednarek, Lyles, Fred and Oblique, Zharnel and Marcel Jacobs," a user commented.

Can Kishane Thompson be the next Usain Bolt?

Although Kishane Thompson is very fast and still very young, matching Usain Bolt's aura and legacy is almost an impossible task. However, he could fill some gaps left by the world record holder and revive the Jamaica-USA rivalry in the 100m.

The 22-year-old opened his 2024 outdoor season at the Jamaican Olympic Trials and was so fast that he was approached by doping officials. Thompson ran a time of 9.82s in the 100m heats, 0.1s faster than the time Noah Lyles clocked to win the 100m title at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials.

Kishane Thompson clocked 9.77s in the 100m finals, and one of Jamaica's most successful coaches, Stephen Francis, claimed he could run 9.6. Even if it doesn't happen this year, Thompson has a bright chance of winning the 100m gold at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Nevertheless, Thompson, Noah Lyles, Oblique Seville, Fred Kerley, and Letsile Tebogo are forming a strong lineup for 100m in Paris. It should be a cracker of a contest if everyone manages to be in top form in Paris.
