Jordan Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, was recently honored with the prestigious title of Best Women's Artistic Gymnastics Coach of the Year. She received this honor on the occasion of National Coaches Day, and this garnered the attention of Chiles, who left a short and impactful three-word message for her coach.
The USA Gymnastics shared a list of coaches from various skills and disciplines, such as gymnastics, trampoline, men's artistic gymnastics, tumbling, rhythmic, double mini, and multiple others. The coaches in charge of these skills, who are exceptional at their work, were honored with the title of 'Coach of the Year.' The first name on the list was Cecil Landi's. The post's caption read:
"Congratulations to the 2024 USAG Coaches of the Year! Swipe to see the coaches who were recognized in each discipline!"
Following this accomplishment, Landi received a heartfelt message from Jordan Chiles on Instagram. The gymnast shared a post by Georgia Gymnastics, or usgagymnastics, on her Instagram story, which stated the honor of her coach and wrote:
"As she should!!!💖 "
Chiles had an eventful campaign at the Paris Olympics; on one hand, she won the gold medal in the women's team all-around event, where she and her team registered a score of 117.296 points. On the other hand, the 23-year-old was embroiled in the bronze medal controversy during the event, as she was ripped off her title, which she won in the floor exercise.
Cecile Landi shared a statement in support of Jordan Chiles amidst the bronze medal controversy
Jordan Chiles initially attained a fifth-place finish in the floor exercise, however, was shifted to third place after an appeal was made by her team and coach, highlighting that the gymnast's difficulty level wasn't marked properly, which increased her score by 0.100 points, leading her towards a bronze medal win, taking the place of Romanian athlete Ana Barbosu.
Following this, the president of the Romanian Olympic committee, Mihai Covaliu, shared a letter with the International Gymnastics Federation, asking for a re-evaluation of his gymnast, Sabrina Voinea. During this, Landi vocalized her support for the American gymnast. In the comment section of one of her Instagram posts, she said:
"I shouldn't have to explain but I will ONCE. Jordan's highest possible SV on a possible floor is a 5.9. At quals and team finals, she received a 5.8 and we didn't question it because we saw that not all elements were completed. During floor finals, we thought it was better and being placed fifth with nothing to lose, I sent the inquiry so I wouldn't regret not asking. I didn't think that it would be accepted and at my surprise it was."
Despite all the debate and discussions, Jordan Chiles' bronze medal was taken away from her, citing that her team was four seconds late in registering the inquiry about the difficulty level. She was again pushed to fifth place, with Barbosu winning the bronze medal.
