Jordan Chiles was recognized as a Power 100 honoree in the category of leader in sports by Ebony magazine. This honor gained by the gymnast garnered the attention of her mother, Gina Chiles.
At the Paris Olympics, the American gymnast secured a gold medal in the team's all-around event. Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Suni Lee, and Hezly Rivera earned 171.296 points, defeating Italy and Brazil, who secured second and third place, respectively.
The 23-year Olympic journey wasn't smooth sailing as she was embroiled in a bronze medal controversy, where she was ripped off her bronze medal, which she bagged in the floor exercise. After a review by the authorities, her medal was given to the Romanian athlete, Ana Barbosu, and Chiles ended the event in the fifth position.
Weeks after this roller-coaster experience in Paris, Ebony Magazine honored Jordan Chiles, as they recognized the gymnast as a Power 100 honoree in the category of leaders in sports. The American penned a heartfelt note after receiving this honor. She showcased gratitude for being a part of the platform and added a note in the caption that read:
"I am so happy to be honored this year by @ebonymagazine as a Power 100 honoree in the category of Leaders In Sports ✨ Being recognized alongside such incredible individuals from our own community is truly humbling, and I’m grateful for this platform that is not only of the culture, but for the culture! Thank you, EBONY, for celebrating how WE show up and for truly moving Black forward," wrote Jordan Chiles.
The gymnast's mother, Gina Chiles, cheered for her daughter in the comment section under the post and wrote:
"Let's GOOOOO Chick!!!"
Along with Chiles, multiple other athletes like Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson, Jalen Hurts, and more were recognized as Power 100 honorees in the category of Leader in Sports.
Jordan Chiles' mother revealed the gymnast's adversities in 2017
Jordan Chiles' mother, Gina Chiles, recently appeared in a podcast, 'Got It From My Momma,' and opened up about the time when the gymnast detached herself from the sport. She unveiled the mental health issues her daughter grappled with in 2017 and how she detached herself from the sport in 2018.
The gymnast's mother revealed that Jordan stopped going to the gym in 2018, and they noticed her doing different activities other than gymnastics.
"In 2017 everything kind of changed. In 2018, Jordan wasn't really going to gym because she's old enough to drive herself. We didn't know she wasn't spending as much time in the gym as she normally did. She was going to the mall and kicking it and doing different things. So we didn't know that she was separating herself from gymnastics because Jordan couldn't really see gymnastics without seeing the hurt and the emotional pain that she experienced over several years," said Gina Chiles.
She added:
"In 2018, she was kind of just going through the motions. And so by the time she got to U.S. Championships, it didn't go the way that she wanted to."
Jordan Chiles is currently performing at the Gold Over America Tour alongside her team, and their last performance was on October 20 in Fort Worth, Texas. Her next performance will be on October 27 in Cleveland.
