Jordan Chiles recently advanced to the Paris Olympics after her significant performance in the US gymnastics trials. In a recent interview, she opened up about taking inspiration from the legendary track athlete Florence-Griffith Joyner for exploring beauty and fashion while performing.
Chiles has represented her country on the Olympic stage once at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games and is now poised to compete in her second Olympics in Paris. She booked her berth after securing third place at the trials with a score of 111.425. A few days after this feat, the 23-year-old was interviewed by Harper's Bazaar, where she opened up about her take on embracing fashion while being passionate for her sport.
When Jordan Chiles came to know about Florence-Griffith Joyner, that was the first time she realized that she could experiment with fashion while competing. The former American sprinter is known for her stellar skills on the field, and apart from that, she was also loved for her iconic four-to-six inch long nails, which she rocked while running.
"She was always known for having long nails, So I thought: 'Okay, if she was able to do that on track, why can't we do that in other sports? Why can't I do that with gymnastics?'" Chiles said.
She also opened up about exploring styles for her sport:
"And there's a typical way you're supposed to look in gymnastics - if you look it up, you see it. You know it. I thought, 'Why can't I just change that part of it? If I can do really cool and unique fashion looks with my leotards, why can't I also do that with my makeup or hair?'"
Jordan Chiles talks about her mother helping her design leotards
Along with her gymnastics skills, Jordan Chiles is also known for her shiny and uniquely styled leotards. One of the biggest helpers behind these designs is her mother, Gina Chiles. In the aforementioned interview, the gymnast spoke about how she and her mother come up with designs for the leotards.
"She's (her mom) been into fashion her whole life as well, so she kind of gives a different perspective, and it's really cool having our heads come together, because we come up with some really cool designs," said Jordan Chiles.
The US team gymnast also revealed that the idea she used behind designing her leotard for the Paris Olympics was mostly inspired by Beyonce's Renaissance tour.
"I'll give you a little hint hint: A lot of my stuff this year is inspired by Beyonce's Renaissance tour," Chiles said.
Jordan Chiles will next be seen competing in her unique style at the 2024 Summer Games, which is slated to be held from July 26 - August 11 in Paris.
