Kenny Bednarek shared the look of his concealed Nike pairs for the 2024 Summer Games and stated that the final look will be revealed at the Paris Olympics. Bednarek earned a qualification in the 100m and 200m events and is headed to the French capital with teammate Noah Lyles, among others.
Kenny Bednarek, the 200m Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, was a standout high schooler at Rice Lake, Wisconsin, where he earned seven state high school track championship titles.
After graduating, Bednarek started his freshman season at Indian Hills Junior College in Iowa. By the end of his freshman year in 2019, he turned professional after signing a sponsorship deal with athletic footwear and apparel giant, Nike.
In July 2019, he shifted from Indian Hills to train alongside Justin Gatlin in Florida. He once unveiled that the relocation wasn't his decision but Nike's, so he decided to 'trust the process'. Fast forward to now, the 200m Olympic silver medalist will compete in Paris.
Days before the Games, he took to his Instagram story and posted photos of the Nike pairs he would carry in Paris. However, he only shared pictures of the shoes wrapped up in two different backpacks, stating that the final looks would only be revealed at the Olympics.
"New Nike spikes to be revealed at the Olympics," his caption read.
At the recently concluded US Olympic Trials, Bednarek ran the 200m in a record-setting time of 19.59s, which earned him a Paris seat behind top finisher Noah Lyles. The win came after he finished second in the 100m, stopping the clock at 9.87s and earning the coveted Olympic qualification.
Kenny Bednarek - "The goal is to get number one and stay on top when I get there"
Kenny Bednarek was very close to taking the 200m victory at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but the Canadian sprinter, Andre De Grasse, outpaced him and won in 19.62s. The loss still affects Bednarek, who has since been working towards snatching the Olympic gold.
Bednarek sat in a conversation with TMJ4, a Milwaukee-based news station (under NBC affiliation), to talk about his Paris Olympic goals and how laser-focussed he is for the 200m gold.
"So every time I see it? You know it's always like dang, I almost had it. So now what do I gotta do different to get it this year you know..," he said.
Kenny Bednarek further expressed that being the second-fastest felt good, but his goal is to get the 'fastest' title.
"Being the second fastest is nice, but I wanna be, you know, the number one. So far the past couple years it's eluded me. The goal is to get number one and you know stay on top when I get there," he added.
The men's 100m heats are slated for August 3, at the 2024 Paris Olympics while the same for the men's 200m will take place on August 5.
