Nebraska Cornhuskers Women's Volleyball team captain Lexi Rodriguez received a major honor from the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association). The 21-year-old was named the West Region's 2024 Player of the Year.
Rodriguez is the first defensive libero to win this award. She has had an impressive season so far with a total of 419 digs (3.81 digs per set).
Additionally, the Huskers libero also made it to the AVCA's West All-Region team with four other teammates. Other Huskers include Merritt Beason, Bergen Reilly, Harper Murray, and Andi Jackson, making it a combined six honors for the Huskers including Rodriguez's individual award.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers announced its captain's impressive achievement on Instagram:
"For the first time ever, a Libero has been named as an @avcavolleyball Regional Player of the Year! @lexi.rodriguez_"
Earlier this month, Rodriguez also won several honors from the Big Ten Conference. She was included in All Big-Ten's first team and also won the Big Ten's Libero of the Season for her performance in the Conference Championships where she registered 395 digs and 107 assists.
Lexi Rodriguez also won the Big Ten 2024 title this season with the Huskers where they shared the title with Penn State. Both teams finished with 19 wins and one loss after the conclusion of their respective 20 matches.
Lexi Rodriguez shares her opinion on equaling former Huskers player Kayla Banwarth's record
Lexi Rodriguez recently opened up about equaling former Nebraska Cornhuskers player Kayla Banwarth's record for the most digs (1706). She matched this record last month and currently has 1843 digs to her name.
In an interview just a few days after this achievement, Rodriguez termed the moment as 'surreal'. She also mentioned that the record wasn't her aim after joining this program during the 2021-22 season. She said (via Sports Illustrated):
"It's very surreal. That wasn't a goal I had when I was being recruited or even when I got here. I just found out on the bus the other day and it's just really cool, especially for someone that I looked up to."
Similar to Lexi Rodriguez, Banwarth was also a defensive libero for the Huskers between 2007-10. She also competed for the national team where she won the team gold at the 2014 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.
