Lindsey Vonn expressed excitement as US skier Paula Moltzan congratulated her team for an impressive season start at the 2024/25 Alpine Skiing World Cup. Vonn retired from professional skiing in 2019 but has been a beacon of support to the younger athletes.
After Lara Gut-Behrami walked home with the overall World Cup title at the 2023/24 Alpine Skiing World Cup, the women are back to compete in the 2024/25 edition.
In the season opener on October 26, 2024, Mikaela Shiffrin clinched the first-run win in the Giant Slalom in Soelden Austria. However, after Italian skier Federica Brignone clinched the win in the second run, the double Olympic gold medalist faded to fifth behind fellow US skier and fourth-finisher, Katie Hensien.
Another US athlete, Nina O'Brien, competed in her first World Cup race 19 months after sustaining a fracture in the lower leg. She finished seventh and recorded her career-best result ahead of her team member, Moltzan, who finished 11th. The US women's team's effort produced the strongest results in a World Cup giant slalom since 1985.
Celebrating the success, Moltzan took to her Instagram handle and posted a photo carousel with the caption:
"Holy TEAM! USA USA USA. Couldn’t be more proud of our come back girls!"
The 82-time World Cup winner Lindsey Vonn, who retired from the sport in 2019 citing injuries, issued a two-word message to congratulate the US team.
"F**k yeah!!!"
Mikaela Shiffrin also chimed in and posted the same on her Instagram handle.
Lara Gut-Behrami, the 42-time World Cup winner, skipped the season opener after her knee issue continued to bother her physically.
Lindsey Vonn thought that Mikaela Shiffrin's 100th World Cup win would be crazy
Lindsey Vonn set the record for the most World Cup wins by reaching the 63rd mark in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. In an exclusive interview with Olympics.com, she lauded Mikaela Shiffrin for reaching the 97th mark at the 2023/24 Alpine Skiing World Cup season and highly anticipated the latter's 100th win.
"It would be an incredible milestone. The fact that she didn’t just break the record but now she's going to break 100 is crazy. And I think if you look at it, it's the evolution of sports. We all push each other to break new glass ceilings. And she’s pushing it for the next generation and hopefully she inspires the next wave of American skiers," she said.
The women skiers will next take the slopes for Slalom on November 16, 2024. The season will conclude on 22-27 March 2024.
