Lindsey Vonn congratulated Jannik Sinner on his second Australian Open victory. The Italian tennis player defeated Alexander Zverev in the finals on Sunday to lift his third Grand Slam title.
Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open and became the first player since Rafael Nadal at the 2006 Roland Garros to defend his maiden major title this year. The 23-year-old put up a commanding performance in the finals, winning in straight sets to become the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles.
He shared his joy in an Instagram post afterward and wrote:
"Taking this trophy home for a second time feels absolutely unreal!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ To my team and all of you who’ve cheered me on from every corner of the world – thank you! Huge respect to @alexzverev123 for an incredible match 🤝🏻🤝🏻🤝🏻🇦🇺 @australianopen"
Lindsey Vonn, who is friends with Sinner and was cheering for him throughout the tournament, commented:
"Yeeeesssse!!!!!🦊🏆💪🏻"
Vonn and Sinner have known each other for several years due to their shared love for skiing. The two-time Australian Open champion was a competitive skier before turning to tennis and has praised the Olympic champion's 'incredible' comeback at 40.
"She's doing amazing. Comeback is something incredible. I know her, we went actually on the slopes together," he said (via Eurosport)
Vonn retired in 2019 with 82 World Cup wins, the most by a female skier at the time, and made the comeback in December last year.
"He really reminds me of Roger" - Lindsey Vonn on Jannik Sinner after 2024 Australian Open win
Jannik Sinner had been in just a single Grand Slam semifinal before winning his first title at the 2024 Australian Open. Having known the Italian for several years, Lindsey Vonn said she wasn't surprised at his win, and reminded her of 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.
“He's just a great athlete, very smart and I'm not surprised that he won Australia. I thought he would win before he did, but he's someone that's going to be around for a long time. And he really reminds me of Roger, to be honest," she told ATP
Vonn praised the 23-year-old's ability to remain calm under pressure and added:
“So it's the kind of fearlessness that he puts everything out there no matter what the situation. And that perspective, I think, is really different from most people, most athletes, and I think he uses that to his advantage.”
The 40-year-old has managed a best finish of fourth since her comeback and is now aiming for a medal at the World Championships.
