Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, broke her silence on the ongoing news of her retirement. She denied the claims and said that her statements were misinterpreted.
Raygun received a lot of criticism after her performance at the Paris Olympics, as her debut at the games did not go as planned. Along with this, she also became a meme online because of some of her dance moves during her performance in Paris.
Days after this, Rachael appeared in an interview with The Jimmy and Nath Show, where she spoke about having no plans of competing in the next Olympic games. She also mentioned that although she wants to compete, the online trolling has made it difficult for her.
Following this, it was interpreted that Raygun is retired; however, she has shared a clarifying statement in her recent conversation with 'The Projecttv'. She revealed that she has not retired yet, and her statements about not competing further were mistakenly understood. She jokingly said Ray Hadley is the one who is retiring and not her.
"Global news: Raygun is retiring. I know, it's gotten so much attention. So, I was on 2Day FM, and I was talking about competing and, 'yeah, I don't really see myself competing anymore,' and they're like, 'Global News- Raygun is retiring, and it has just kind of gotten little bit out of hand. It's not me that retiring, guys. It's Ray Hadley, he's the Ray that's retiring. It's not me. We discussed it, he was going to have today and I'm going to have another day down that track. Razor Ray had already got his day earlier this year. Raygun's not retiring," said Raygun.
Raygun further spoke about not competing in the upcoming Olympics, as breakdancing is not a part of the 2028 LA games. However, she said that she would still continue to dance.
"I'm still going to go to community jams. I'm still probably going to get down and dance and enter a community jam, things like that."
"But in terms of those elite competitions and the Olympics, which, by the way, breaking is not even in the Olympics in the next one. So, it kind of turned into a really big thing today that i've been getting really lovely messages from people. Thank you so much for your messages, but, I'm still going."
Raygun opened up about facing backlash after the Paris Olympics
The Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, or Raygun, opened up about the trolling she received online after the Paris Olympics, in an interview with Stellar Magazine. She expressed her thoughts on receiving comments on her age after her performance at the Paris Olympics.
“Our culture is very obsessed with age…I think it’s been a real sticking point for a lot of people: me essentially not knowing my place, what I should be doing with my time at this age, [in their view] it’s certainly not participating in that environment, even though I wasn’t the oldest there,” said Rachel Gunn.
Raygun also revealed her sentiments about hate comments she got after the Summer Games:
“There was so much hate and emotion that I needed to wait for everyone to calm down a bit...I think the haters want me to be locked away in a room, ashamed and quiet.”
Alongside being a breakdancer, Rachael Gunn also carries a doctorate in cultural studies.
