The 2024 London Diamond League featured stellar performances from track and field athletes at the London Stadium on Saturday, July 20, that drew about a massive 60,000 spectators. With the Paris Olympics approaching, athletes delivered their absolute best in London, smashing national records, meet records, world-leading marks, and personal bests.
Femke Bol clocked a new meet record time to win the final Diamond League meeting before the Paris Olympics with a 51.30s in the women’s 400m hurdles. In the women’s pole vault, Australia’s Nina Kennedy clinched a top victory with a clearance of 4.85m, while the reigning Olympic champion Katie Moon of the USA had a disappointing meet, failing to clear beyond the 4.65m mark.
In the women’s and men’s 400m, Nickisha Pryce of Jamaica and Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain both rose to the occasion, with Pryce setting a national record and Hudson-Smith achieving a European record at the London Diamond League. In the women’s 800m, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson set a new national record with a time of 1:54.61.
The men’s shot put saw Ryan Crouser losing to Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri at the London Diamond League, with both recording their best efforts of 22.37 and 22.52s respectively in their fifth attempt. This makes Fabbri a strong competitor of Crouser with just a few days to go for the Paris Olympics.
In the women’s 200m and men’s 100m, the United States’ Gabby Thomas and Noah Lyles emerged as the winners. Thomas staged a late comeback to win the event in a time of 21.82s, while Lyles accomplished a personal best of 9.81s.
