Former track and field Olympic champion Justin Gatlin recently applauded the Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis for breaking the world record one after the other. Duplantis broke the world record for the tenth time at the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday.
Duplantis defended his Olympic title at the recently concluded Paris Games, where he stood atop the podium with a leap of 6.2 meters. Yet, he attempted the world record and achieved it with a clearance of 6.25 meters. Just days later, the 25-year-old Swede participated in the Silesia Diamond League on Sunday, August 25, where he replicated the same performance.
Even after winning the event with a 6-meter jump, he raised the bar to 6.26 meters to smash the world record again. Notably, this marked the tenth time Mondo Duplantis broke the pole vault world record.
Following his historic performances in August, the former five-time Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin and the retired Bahamian runner Rodney Green analyzed Duplantis' world record-breaking spree on their "Ready Set Go" podcast on Friday. Both of them praised him, calling his streak of consecutive world records a truly remarkable achievement.
"Mondo "CHEATCODE" Duplantis. My thing is like how can you even do that because each world record is special within itself; no human has ever done that achievement. So how you gonna water it down because this man has found a way to keep breaking the record by a centimeter?" Gatlin said. (44:00 onwards on Apple Podcasts)
"He really going out there, and I mean, if I remember correctly, when it comes to World Athletics back then, when they were the IAAF, it was for every world record you get six figures 100k, so... go back and check how many world records this man has had from indoors to outdoors in the last three years; that's crazy, like he's "Mr. World Record" for sure" he added.
"I would like to jump over 6.30m" - Mondo Duplantis to continue the world record streak
Mondo Duplantis shattered the world record for the first time in 2020 when he surpassed Renaud Lavillenie’s 6.14-meter mark set in 2014. Since then he has continued to raise the bar and added one centimeter with each new record, ultimately reaching the milestone of breaking the world record 10 times.
However, the Swede has no plans to stop anytime soon, as he once revealed that he wants to keep going and clear 6.30 meters.
"I know I can jump higher, and I want to jump a lot higher. I would like to jump over 6.30m" he said. (via Olympics.com)
Mondo Duplantis is currently trailing Ukrainian legend Sergey Bubka's feat of breaking the pole vault world record 13 times.
