Masai Russell recently spoke about the most memorable race of her career. The American athlete wrapped up her 2024 season after competing at the Athlos NYC meet.
Russell is currently in her off-season and is gearing up for the 2025 season as she shares updates about her training and workout sessions. Amid this, she recently shared a Q&A session on her Instagram stories, where one of her fans asked about her 'most memorable race.'
To this, the 24-year-old shared a video from the Paris Olympics, where she was seen hugging her family after winning the 100m hurdles race, and wrote in the story:
"The Olympics for sure," Masai Russell wrote.
The American athlete clocked 12.33s in the 100m hurdles to stand atop the podium at the 2024 Summer Games. She bested Cyrena Samba-Mayela and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who secured second and third place, respectively.
Following this triumph, Russell competed at the Athlos NYC meet, which was held on September 26. Here, she participated in the 100m hurdles but earned a third-place finish by scoring 12.44s. She was bested by her Olympic contender Camacho-Quinn, who claimed first place by recording 12.36s.
Masai Russell opened up about overcoming the challenges in 2024 and winning an Olympic gold medal
Months after her Paris Olympics exploits, Masai Russell won the Breakthrough Performer Wing Award, where she opened up about her struggles and how she overcame them. The 24-year-old also spoke about becoming an Olympic champion in the 100m hurdles dash. She said that this year was 'super hard' for her and recalled her crashing incident in Budapest.
"This year was super, super hard for me. If you guys heard me speak, do interviews or anything like that. Like this year was very, very tough for me. I failed to make the final in Budapest. I crashed into the hurdle, which, ultimately made me not qualify for the final," Masai Russell said.
Russell also reflected on her Olympic win and said that it was an honor.
"So, you know, I came in to this year with a different mindset, and I told myself it was going to be different. And I told myself also, I was not going to wait another four years and regret not doing what I needed to do on that day of the Olympic final and not get the job done. So I got out there. I did my thing."
"It's still so crazy just saying that I'm an Olympic champion. It's such a blessing, still such an honor. And it just made me even more hungry. I'm excited. I'm excited for the future. Like I said, I'm not even in my prime yet, so it's really just the beginning."
Masai Russell will commence her 2025 season by competing at the Millrose Games, which is slated for February 8 and will be held at the Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York, NY.
