Masai Russell recently competed in the Texas Tech Corky Classic where she competed in the 60m sprint and 60m hurdles events. The 24-year-old won both events after registering a run time of 7.34 seconds in the dash and 7.89 seconds in the hurdles.
Masai Russell opens up about her inspiration behind impressive performances in 2024
Masai Russell shared the inspiration behind performing well at the US Olympic Track and Field trials and the 2024 Paris Olympics despite a shaky start to the season. The Washington native won both events and also moved up to fifth place in the all-time 100m hurdles list with a run time of 12.25 seconds during the trials.
In a podcast, Russell shared about her never giving up ideology and how she uses this mantra in her track career. The 2024 Olympic gold medalist also mentioned that she faced one of the difficult fields during the trials. She said (via The Pivot Podcast, 13:40 onwards):
"For me I am just a relentless person and I'm the type of person, I'm going to live for what I preach. I always said like my parents gave me a pretty good life, I never had to really want for nothing so much and I feel like when you start saying like that, God be like, "I'mma show you."
She further added:
"This year I was faced with the hardest trials ever and like I had to practice what I preach, it's easy but when you in it you got to be the example."
The 2024 season was only Masai Russell's first full pro season as a track athlete where she was able to get her hands on the Olympic gold.
