Masai Russell expressed her excitement for her 2025 season-end 60m hurdles result, highlighting her significant progress since turning professional in 2023. Notably, in her first professional season, Russell achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the Olympic champion in the 100m hurdles, surpassing both the reigning and World champions.
Russell, who holds a personal best of 7.75s in the 60m hurdles, competed at the University of Kentucky before shifting to elite track. Her NCAA resume boasts a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles at the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships.
Post an impressive 2024 elite season which saw her win her maiden Olympic gold, Russell started 2025 with the 60m hurdles at the Texas Corky Classic. She won the feat in a time of 7.89s on January 17, en route to another indoor race at the Millrose Games.
In her recent Instagram story, the 25-year-old shared her 60m hurdles statistics and how every elite year ended successfully. She began the 2023 season with a 60m hurdles time of 8.13 seconds, reaching the 2023 World semi-finals. The following year, she started the season with a 60m hurdles time of 8.09 seconds and ultimately secured the 100m hurdles title in Paris.
Russell noted her Texas Corky Classic winning score, anticipating her end-of-season fate. She captioned her story with peeking face emojis.
At the 2023 World Championships, the Olympic gold medalist qualified for the semi-finals but couldn't make it to the final stage after a hurdle setback.
Russell clocked 12.25s at the 2024 US Olympic trials, recording her personal best in the discipline.
Masai Russell made her feelings known about her first hurdle race in four months
Masai Russell competed at the 2024 Athlos NYC, taking the bronze medal behind Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Alaysha Johnson. Starting her track season at the 2025 Texas Corky Classic, Russell expressed her feelings about racing in the hurdles after a four-month hiatus. She took to her Instagram story to exude joy, writing:
"First hurdle race in 4 months! Happy to be back with so much more to come. I was so high over the first couple but we got the job done. This szn will be great one! Claiming it now."
In another story, she offered glimpses of her training week, leading to the Texas event, and a return to the grind.
“Long travel day Thursday. Competition on Friday.. great week of work, back to the lab.”
Notably, the hurdler signed with the Grand Slam track league, Michael Johnson's brainchild, in September 2024. The league will debut in April 2025.
