Suni Lee has said that she is unsure about her participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Lee explained about what she plans to do after the completion of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Suni Lee started her career at the age of six. Her first international debut was with the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Her splendid performance led the team to win gold. Later, she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics along with Simone Biles.
The 21-year-old joined Auburn University after the Tokyo Olympics but dropped out in 2023 after being diagnosed with two kidney ailments. Lee announced that the 2023 Collegiate Championship would be her last. After three months of treatment and tests, she returned to the gym for practice. In 2024, she again stood second behind Biles in the U.S. Olympic team trials and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Lee said she wants to start her life in New York after the Paris Olympics.
“I don’t know how much gymnastics I’ll be doing during that time, but maybe L.A. in 2028. We’ll see,” she was quoted by Elle.
When asked why Midwesterners would love to live in New York, Lee replied:
“There’s so much good food here. Also, I feel like it’s just such a good place to start my life. I feel like my whole life has just been gymnastics, so this is just me stepping into a new chapter and doing something new with my life.”
The gymnast is officially headed to the Paris Olympics along with Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Hezly Rivera, and Jade Carey. This time could be different for Lee due to the health issues detected over the last year. However, this won't stop her from giving her best performance.
Suni Lee's performance in the Olympics U.S. Team Trials
Even after receiving a renal ailment diagnosis in 2023, Lee persevered and made it to the U.S. Olympic team. On Day 1 of the trials, Suni Lee's all-around score was 56.025, getting third place behind Simone Biles. On Day 2, Lee got the same score as Day 1 on the balance beam, i.e., 14.733.
On the final day of the trial, Suni Lee qualified for the Paris Olympics with a score of 111.675. For the first time in the history of US Olympic gymnastics, the team has two Olympic all-around champions: Biles (the 2016 Olympic all-around winner) and Lee (the 2020 Tokyo Olympic all-around champion).
