Nadia Comaneci on having no expectations in the 1976 Olympic Games
Nadia Comaneci scored the first perfect 10 in gymnastics during the 1976 Olympic Games. The Romanian Gymnast was 14 years old when she etched her name in history books. She opened up in an interview with Olympics.com, about having no expectations while embarking on her first Olympic Games.
“I was asked, ‘What do you think you’re going to do at the Olympics?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I hope to win a medal and, hopefully, it’s gold. There was no expectation. I knew I was good at what I was doing, but I didn’t know how good I was compared to others,” she said.
Comaneci spoke about her mindset which brought her immense glory in the sport.
“I didn’t even think about the score. I was more into not making a mistake because the Olympics are every four years, just trying to concentrate on what I have to deliver in that minute and 20 seconds. That was the only thing that was in my head,” she added.
With her incredible performances that led her to win five Olympic Gold medals, Nadia Comaneci stands as an inspiration to generations to come.
