Michael Phelps congratulated US professional golfer, Xander Schauffele, on winning the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon. The PGA Tour player also boasts an Olympic gold medal in the men's individual golf event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian with 23 individual golds in his stellar resume. His second Olympic stint at the 2012 London Olympics earned him four golds and two silvers, but his mind shut off swimming soon after the event. He was determined to end his career but returned in 2014 with the 2016 Rio Olympics in mind.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won another string of medals- five golds and a silver- alongside record breaks. In an interview with Today Show later, Michael Phelps assured that he would finally retire.

"Done, done, done — and this time I mean it"

When he first retired in 2012, Phelps shifted to golf and played for two years. Now, eight years into the 'final' retirement that he announced in 2016, Phelps has become an uber-focussed golfer with the 'scratch golfer' in mind. Phelps recently extended heartfelt notes to Xander Schauffele, his fellow Olympian and PGA Tour golfer, who added the 152nd Open Championship win to his repertoire.

Taking to his Instagram story, he congratulated Schauffele, writing:

The victory marked the second major of Schauffele's career. He delivered a zen-like six-under-par final round to surpass the contentious line-up of rivals in the leaderboard.

He left behind England's Justin Rose and the USA's Billy Horshel by shots. The win came after he collected his first major win at the PGA Championships in May 2024. Schauffele scored 21-under-par and defeated Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke.

Michael Phelps wishes his sons to take up golf in his 'dream world'

Michael Phelps shared that he could draw a similarity between golf and swimming since both 'focus on the small and simple technique things'. While he wishes to go further in the game and be a scratch golfer, he also wishes for his sons to pursue golf in his 'dream world'.

"In my dream world, I would love for them to play golf and give it a run to try to be a professional golfer. I’m in love with the sport. They watch me obsess about the sport. I have a golf club sitting next to my desk," he said. (via Golf.com)

Phelps learned golf in the truest sense when he joined Hank Haney on "The Haney Project" and broke 90 for the first time.
