Mikaela Shiffrin heads home following nasty fall in Killington that extended her 100th World Cup win wait

Mikaela Shiffrin has returned home after suffering a devastating fall during a race at Killington that disrupted her pursuit for the 100th World Cup win. The American skier endured a nasty fall during the Stifel Killington Cup in Vermont.

After securing the lead in the first run, the 29-year-old Shiffrin faltered during her second attempt. As the skier approached the sharp turn near the finish line, she seemed to lose the alane slide out of control. She was sent tumbling, hitting one of the gates before crashing into another and finally slamming into the safety net at the edge of the slope.

The 2-year-old remained on the ground for several moments as the safety crew swiftly rushed to her aid, eventually escorting her off the course on a sled. Shiffrin's pursuit for the 100th World Cup win is prolonged following the fall.

The legendary skier, who grew up in New Hampshire and Colorado and honed her skills at nearby Burke Mountain Academy returned home ahead of the upcoming Downhill and Super-G World Cup in Beaver Creek, Colorado, USA.

Shiffrin is poised to compete at the upcoming World Cup in her hometown slated to be held on December 14 and 15, 2024. She shared a picture after returning to Colorado and wrote:

"Home," and added two teary-eyed emojis.

Mikaela Shiffrin recently reflected on the dreadful fall she suffered during the giant slalom World Cup in Vermont. While sharing a video of her fall, she stated that her recovery would take a few weeks before she would be able to endure any physical strain.

"Oh look…I’ve been impaled," Shiffrin wrote. "Gonna be a minute…like a few weeks minimum…to be able to take on much of any force. Thank you all again for every ounce of love and support, in the grand scheme, it’s a small pot hole (pun intended), and I’m very thankful for that!"

Shiffrin endured an abrasion on her left hip and a punctured wound to her abdomen. She also suffered significant muscle damage following the brutal crash. In Shiffrin's absence from the podium finish, Sara Hector of Sweden secured the lead in the giant slalom.
