Mikaela Shiffrin expressed her thoughts as American skier Paula Moltzan secured her maiden Giant Slalom World Cup podium finish on Tuesday. She finished third behind Alice Robinson of New Zealand and Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami.
Moltzan placed 10th after a slow first run, trailing 1.15s before a blistering second and final run propelled her to third position. She finished 0.94 seconds behind Robinson, and 0.38 seconds behind Gut-Behrami, becoming the only second American after Lindsey Vonn to secure a GS podium finish in the 30s.
“I just wanted to give it my all and see what would happen. I think sitting in 10th after first run, well it’s a tough place to move up from. And so when I had the green light at the end, I was like, I’m going to move up a couple." Moltzan said (via Associated Press).
Shiffrin was elated over Moltzan's victory and wrote in an Instagram story:
"OMG OMG yesss @paulamoltzan 💪 and congrats team !!! 🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳."
The 29-year-old is out of action after sustaining an injury in Killington last year. She underwent surgery in December 2024 to remove the fluid from her punctured wound and is unsure of her return to the sport this season.
“I think if all things had gone perfectly and all the drainage just came out, we were pretty sure the season would be possible. It just depends on how I improve over the next weeks and months. There’s not a lot of precedent for this injury in our sport," she told Olympics.com.
Shiffrin, who won two races this season, is the most decorated alpine skier in history with 99 World Cup victories and was eager to win her 100th.
Mikaela Shiffrin shares a positive update about her skiing return
Mikaela Shiffrin recently shared a positive about her possible return to skiing and claimed she was hoping to receive good news from the doctors soon. The Olympic champion said she was working hard in and outside the gym, having done some skiing practice as well.
"We’re still working hard in the gym and starting to get some work done on snow now as well! So many of you have asked when I’ll be able to return to racing—I’m hoping to have some good news soon! Thank you for your support and your patience," Mikaela Shiffrin said.
The 29-year-old returned to the slopes earlier this month but hasn't fully recovered yet. The World Cup season will culminate on March 27, and while the American is likely to miss out on the crystal globes, she would be eager to return and complete a century of World Cup victories.
