Mikaela Shiffrin's fiance Aleksander Aamodt Kilde opened up about his harrowing crash during a World Cup downhill race in Wengen, Switzerland, in January 2024, which left him with severe injuries.
The incident occurred on a crucial turn near the finish line, where the bronze medalist collided with the safety nets at a staggering 120 km/h. Kilde suffered a dislocated shoulder, two torn ligaments, and a deep calf laceration that required urgent surgery to address nerve damage.
In an interview with CNN Sport's Coy wire in January 2025, he reflected on the moment he lost and regained consciousness.
"The only thing I was thinking about was sort of survival, trying to breathe and control the situation as much as I could,” he recalled. “I knew that I couldn’t do much myself because the pain was so severe and I had to just use my breath[ing]. Luckily, I had people around me that took care of the crucial things. I just remember my thoughts running [wild] and seeing it was really serious."
In October 2024, Mikaela Shiffrin's fiance announced that he would not be retiring but needed more time for recovery due to additional surgeries.
