Mikaela Shiffrin reflects on her decision to return to skiing events after her crash in Vermont
Mikaela Shiffrin reflected on her decision to return to skiing events following a crash in Killington, Vermont, which had kept her out of World Cup competitions. The crash resulted in a puncture wound and a tear in her abdominal muscles.
Ahead of her comeback in France on January 30 in night slalom, she was asked about her decision to return on TODAY. She expressed her thoughts (1:57 onwards):
“Yeah, I wouldn’t say 100%. I mean, I think we're going to be dealing with sort of the remnants of this injury throughout the rest of the season. But it's not, you know. It's not painful. My muscles are working again. I've been able to get my strength built back up. I'm in a really good place physically and it's just the load of skiing is so high, you kind of have to sort of work your way into it.”
She added how the next step to recovery was racing in competitions, stating:
“I think the next step is racing. That's the next step of this recovery, so the recovery is not really over, but I’m strong enough to get back in the start gate, and yeah, that's the next phase of this progression.”
She further mentioned that her decision to return to skiing came on the first day of her Giant Slalom training, where she pushed herself with intensity. Despite her initial hesitation about how it would go, the session went well, which made her ultimately decide to be back.
