Mikaela Shiffrin recently shared her admiration for Tina Maze, whom she considers the greatest of all time (GOAT) in skiing. With four Olympic medals, nine world championship medals, and record-breaking runs in the FIS World Cup, Maze has left a lasting impact on the skiing world, inspiring the current generation of athletes, including Shiffrin.
The Slovenian skier made her mark on the slopes at the age of 16. Further, she marked her prospect at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The former skier secured two silver medals at the 2010 Games, including the Super-G and Giant Slalom. The glorious feat was Slovenia's best-ever result in the Olympic Winter Games.
The following year, Maze bagged her country's first-ever world title in Giant Slalom at the 2011 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. In 2013, she won 11 races and dominated the overall season's standing with 2414 points, the highest total ever attained by any skier, male or female.
Opting out from competing in several races the next year, Maze entirely shifted her focus to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where she clinched two gold medals in downhill and giant slalom. She shared the gold medal with Switzerland’s Dominique Gisin in the downhill event, before hanging up her skies in 2016.
In a recent interview with Eurosport, when asked about her GOAT skier, Shiffrin acknowledged and mentioned Maze.
