Mikaela Shiffrin recently shared an update about the injury she sustained during the World Cup. Her fiancé, Aleksander Kilde, reacted to the skier's update.
Shiffrin met a devastating crash while she was attempted to bag her 100th World Cup win at the Killington Alpine World Cup. She crashed into the protective fencing and was immediately attended by the ski patrol, who took her to the medical center. It was later found that the skier sustained severe muscle trauma and a puncture wound that affected her movement.
A few days after this crash, Shiffrin uploaded a video on her Instagram handle where she shared an update about her injury, stating that she underwent an unexpected surgery.
"Gotta love a curveball…😅 Had a little unexpected surgery on Thursday evening after feeling a bit under the weather. Turns out I had a little cavity deeper than the wound tract that was filled with old hematoma and wasn’t properly draining with a wound vac or normal packing…so we went in to wash it out and close it with sutures and a little JP drain to keep the drainage flowing," said Mikaela Shiffrin.
The American alpine skier's fiancé, Aleksander Kilde, reshared this video on his Instagram story and reacted to the update by adding emojis:
"❤️🦸♀️❤️"
Mikaela Shiffrin opened up about the detailed information of her recovery process
Mikaela Shiffrin recently shared a video on her Instagram handle on December 5, where she shared her detailed recovery process and revealed that she was feeling relieved after returning to her own bed. The skier said that she had to return to the hospital as she had air bubbles in her colon.
"So we are home now. I am so excited to be home now and be able to sleep in my own bed. Got here last night and pretty much went straight to the hospital to do a little check and see if there were any updates because there was a little bit of an original concern about my colon as there were some air bubbles where the puncture came like pretty close to the colon," said Mikaela Shiffrin.
She further opened up about the reason behind the bleeding and inflammation in her injury:
"Last night's check confirmed that my colon is indeed intact. We would have seen symptoms sooner but it's just good to have that confirmation. As far as the muscle trauma goes, there is a puncture and basically, whatever stabbed in there did a little dance inside of my obliques and basically tore a cavern into my obliques muscles. So, that's what's causing bleeding and inflammation and just pain in general."
The skier further showcased excitement about cheering her teammates for the upcoming competitions. This isn't the first time Mikaela Shiffrin has met a crash this year; she also faced a devastating accident in January in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, which led to her withdrawal from several competitions. The skier crashed in the safety net and was immediately airlifted to the hospital, where it was revealed that she had sustained an injury in her left leg.
The American alpine skier made her comeback and attained her 99th World Cup win in Gurgl on November 23, 2024. She was nearing her 100th win, but the unfortunate incident at the Killington World Cup has delayed the attainment of that milestone.
