Mikaela Shiffrin's fiance and Norwegian skier Aleksander Kilde showered love on the alpine skier following a heartbreaking end to her first attempt at the 100th World Cup win. The two-time Olympic champion suffered an injury following a crash in Killington.
Shiffrin was leading after the first run and was seconds away from winning the historic 100th World Cup race before clipping a gate and sliding into the fence during her second giant slalom run on November 30. The American had to be carted off on a sled and was ruled out of the next day's slalom race.
The 29-year-old later announced she had been impaled and would require a minimum of a few weeks to get back to skiing.
"I’ve been impaled.😅 Gonna be a minute…like a few weeks minimum…to be able to take on much of any force. Thank you all again for every ounce of love and support, in the grand scheme, it’s a small pot hole (pun intended), and I’m very thankful for that!," Mikaela Shiffrin announced on Instagram.
Shiffrin's fiance Aleksander Kilde showed his support for the skier and reacted with a couple of heart emojis under her post.
"❤️❤️," he posted
The American was equally supportive and caring for Kilde when he suffered a tragic crash in January 2024 and was unsure about his return to the sport. However, the Norwegian recovered well and is back to skiing practice.
The couple have been dating since early 2021 after meeting at a ski camp and made their relationship official on May 31st of that year when the Norwegian posted a photo with Shiffrin, writing:
"If you know, you know... and now you know."
The couple announced their engagement in April 2024.
"I never want to experience this again" - Mikaela Shiffrin's fiance Aleksander Kilde details heartbreaking crash during World Cup downhill race
Mikaela Shiffrin's fiance and 2020 Overall World Cup winner Aleksander Kilde suffered a devastating crash in January 2024 during a downhill race in Wengen that kept him out of action for the rest of the year. The 28-year-old underwent multiple surgeries following the crash and has now opened up about his emotions during the incident.
Speaking to Audi in an episode named 'Kilde: Unscripted', the Norwegian claimed he feared for his life during the accident and didn't want to go through such an experience again in his life.
"I'm fighting for my life. And the impact you have when you go full 90 degrees into the net is brutal. The trauma, everything, it brought some thoughts into my head where I was just like, I never want to experience this again. And maybe this was my last time skiing down a mountain. That were my thoughts," he said [4:50 onwards]
The 32-year-old earlier announced he wouldn't take part in the 2024/25 World Cup season as he had to undergo another shoulder surgery.
