Mikaela Shiffrin and Alexander Kilde are a power couple in the skiing world, but both star athletes are currently out of action as they deal with injuries they suffered due to their crashes in the snow. Recently, Kilde gave fans a positive update on his recovery, returning to some fast-paced skiing after his scary accident on the slopes.
In January 2024, the Norwegian was racing downhill in Wengen, Switzerland, when he crashed into the barriers at a high speed. The accident resulted in a dislocated shoulder, two torn shoulder ligaments, and a severe laceration on his calf that needed urgent surgery due to nerve damage.
Since then, Alexander Kilde has been out of action as he deals with the fallout of his crash, but the skier is slowly building back his strength. Most recently, he took to his Instagram stories to share a video of himself skiing at a high pace.
In an episode of Kilde.unscripted on YouTube, the World Championships medalist discussed his return to the slopes, saying (at 7:56):
“(It) actually feels way better than expected. I'll have to see when I get out on the snow, but actually right now it feels quite normal. First of all, it's fantastic to be able to get into the boots again, and feel the feeling of the tension around my leg and that actually working, because I was really curious about the feeling of that pressure.”
“A couple months ago, it was so far away that I was ever going to be able to ski again. So, boom, now I can get back to normal and then I get slowly into being a professional athlete again, awesome. I'm glad I didn't quit this,” he added.
As Alexander Kilde recovers from his crash, Mikaela Shiffrin is doing the same. The American suffered a horror crash in Killington in late November, which resulted in a puncture wound that has put her out of action for the last few weeks.
Mikaela Shiffrin returns to the slopes after her crash in Killington
Mikaela Shiffrin began her 2024-2025 World Cup season with 97 wins and was slated to become the first skier in history to win 100 World Cup races. She began her season in Soelden but failed to make a podium.
However, she soon turned her momentum around and claimed her 98th and 99th World Cup wins in Levi and Gurgl. From there, Shiffrin arrived at the Killington stop prepped to win her 100th race on home ground, but crashed on her second run, with the fall resulting in a deep puncture wound.
While the American is yet to return to the World Cup circuit after her crash, she recently took to the slopes as part of her recovery. Taking to Instagram on January 9, she shared a video of herself skiing.
“She movin’! 😋,” she captioned the post.
Despite the improvement in her recovery, Mikaela Shiffrin hasn't yet revealed if she will be back for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season. The last World Cup race is scheduled in late March, and fans will hope to see the 27-year-old back in action by then.
