Director Katie Walsh on her approach while filming Simone Biles Rising
Filmmaker Katie Walsh spoke about her experience as well as her approach while making the documentary 'Simone Biles: Rising' based on the star gymnast's life. Walsh revealed how she believed in giving Biles the freedom and space to tell her story while not deviating away from her previous approaches while filming documentary series.
"My whole approach with this film was that there’s this idea of the way the outside world looks in at her, and then there’s the way that she’s experiencing the world that’s around her.Sometimes those things align. Sometimes she is the GOAT, and we see the GOAT. And sometimes we see the GOAT, and she feels insecure. And sometimes you see just this one side of her, and we get to see these other sides of her."
Furthermore, Walsh opened up about including vulnerable topics such as Biles' traumatic experience at the Tokyo Olympics and said:
"It takes a lot. It’s emotionally taxing to go back to all these things. If somebody were constantly bringing up these traumatic experiences in your life and asking you about them, it just emotionally takes a lot. So I’m aware of that."
'Simone Biles Rising: Part 2' will premiere on on October 25, 2024 on Netflix.
