Nadia Comaneci, the former gymnast with five Olympic golds in her repertoire, was present among the audience in the Team finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She shared frame with the French slalom canoeist, Tony Estanguet and one of the most decorated former tennis players, Serena Williams.
Having retired in 1984, the legendary gymnast was one of the members of the star-studded gymnastics arena at the Paris Olympics team finals to cheer on Biles and the US women's gymnastics team. She was joined by former tennis player, Serena Williams, and French slalom canoe athlete, Tony Estanguet. She took to her X handle to post a selfie with all three of them smiling at the camera with the gymnast mat visible in the background.
"In great company tonight #gymnastics #paris2024 #tonyestanguet #SERENA," her caption read.
The US women's gymnastics team scored a total of 171.296 to finish atop the podium after settling for silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Nadia Comaneci on Simone Biles - "Every generation needs someone to inspire them and she is one of them"
Nadia Comaneci is known for being the youngest gymnast at 14 to receive perfect 10s at the Olympic Games. Her stellar performances at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games earned her six more perfect 10s and gold medals in the all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam.
Considered one of the world's best-known gymnasts, Comaneci brought unprecedented global popularity to the sport. In an exclusive with PEOPLE Magazine, Comaneci said,
"This is what she's doing now for this generation. She's somewhere so high that everyone is looking at her and saying, 'Yeah, I'm going to try to do that in my own way," Comaneci said.
Expressing appreciation for Simone Biles for paving the way and setting a standard for the younger athletes, Comaneci added,
"She is given this opportunity to understand who you are and to break barriers and inspire the new generation. Every generation needs someone to inspire them and she is one of them," she added.
After what was a turbulent campaign in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the wake of Biles' experiencing 'twisties', the US women's gymnastics team had dubbed their Paris Olympic stint as a 'redemption tour'.
