Riley Gaines recently took a dig at the WNBA amid the ongoing Caitlin Clark's 'white privilege' remarks after receiving the Athlete of The Year Award by Time Magazine. In an interview with the publication, Clark recognized the privilege she holds as a white person.
Clark also emphasized how much the success of the WNBA and basketball owes to the contributions of black players. However, these remarks did not sit comfortably with former NCAA swimmer-turned-activist Gaines.
"I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege. A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them," Clark said.
In a recent interview with CNN Sports, following Clark's comments, Washington Mystics' co-owner Sheila Johnson emphasized that while the 2024 WNBA All-Star receives huge attention, there is unrecognized talent in the sport.
"We have so much talent out there that has been unrecognized, and I don’t think we can pin it on just one player," said Johnson.
Replying to this, Gaines voiced a contrasting view, stating WNBA is mishandling the situation and undermining its own success, instead of embracing Clark's popularity.
"I’ve never seen an organization self-implode the way the WNBA has in response to Clark’s stardom."
Riley Gaines faces a jab from Gabby Thomas following her criticism of Caitlin Clark
Riley Gaines expressed disappointment in Clark's remarks about 'white privilege,' suggesting she missed the mark.
Although Gaines acknowledged Clark's talent and impact, she criticized her for getting involved in controversial issues, arguing staying neutral would have been a better choice.
"No one was asking for Caitlin Clark to position herself as a right-wing hero," Gaines said. "All she needed to do was remain neutral. She’s a phenom who inspires countless young girls to play & achieve, so I still have great admiration for her, but she missed the mark on this one."
However, Gaines' remarks did not amaze Paris Olympics medalist Gabby Thomas, who suggested the former swimmer should refrain from voicing her opinion on every issue.
"Girl are you fr??? You don’t have to share your opinion on everything, just sit this one out," Thomas wrote.
WNBA star Clark's remarks caused quite a stir in the sports circuit with activists including Gaines, and American sports journalist Jemele Hill presenting their contrasting views on the matter.
