The Great Britain Olympic team was recently announced, and Josh Kerr has qualified for the 1500m event in Paris. He competed in the 800m at the trials; however, after having a disappointing ending in the discipline, he made the team with his previous wins in the 1500m and has made a bold statement on the same.
The Scottish athlete missed a podium finish in Great Britain's Olympic trials in the 800m after a clash with fellow athlete Elliot Giles which resulted in both of them falling in the last 50m. This crushed his 800m Olympic dream; however, with his 2023 World Championship win, he has qualified for the 1500m and is poised to square off against his arch-rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Following the announcement of Great Britain's Olympic team, Kerr took to his social media and shared a bunch of photos of himself in a white dressing gown. He added a bold statement in his caption that read:
"Paris ⏳. #teamgb #roadtoparis #olympics #notimefortalk."
Josh Kerr had also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics against Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m but finished third, recording a time of 3:29.05. The Norwegian athlete clinched gold, clocking a time of 3:28.32.
Josh Kerr opens up about his Olympic dream
In a conversation with Olympics.com at the start of the 2024 season, Josh Kerr opened up about his Paris Olympics dream. He reflected on competing at the Summer Games and stated that he knew his Olympic win was possible from a very young age
"I've wanted to win these Olympic Games since I was 12 years old," said Josh Kerr. "I've known that for a very long time and I knew it was possible."
He also showcased his excitement about the Olympics being held in Paris:
"When Paris was announced, I was like, outside of it being in the UK, having it in Europe is very special, very close to home. So having a city that will create the buzz around it like Paris will, you know the energy of that city."
The 26-year-old defeated his rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic 2024 on May 26. He stood atop the podium, clocking a time of 3:45.34, and the Norwegian athlete was the runner-up with a time of 3:45.60.
Following the win, Kerr said:
"I felt very strong through the first kilometer, and I was like, you know what, it's time to press and push and see what these guys have got."
After producing a fascinating start to the 2024 season at the World Athletics Indoor Championship and the Pre Classic, Kerr will next be competing in the 1500m at the Paris Olympics, slated for July 26 - August 11.
