Noah Lyles came from behind to win the men's 100m final by 0.005 seconds at the Paris Olympics, clocking a stunning 9.79 ahead of Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley who clocked 9.79 and 9.81 respectively. Lyles will next focus on the men's 200m and 4x100m relay events as he chases the triple gold in Paris.
Swedish pole vaulter and Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis congratulated Lyles and lauded the triple world champion for living up to expectations on the Olympic stage. In a post-event press conference, Duplantis explained that Lyles has made a great impact in the sport and is currently one of the greatest sprinters in the world.
He added that the newly-crowned Olympic 100m champion likes to talk big but he lives up to the billing, which makes the sport interesting.
"I mean, it’s pretty crazy. What Noah has been able to do I guess like a transition from the 200m to now just being the absolute fastest and best sprinter in the entire world is nothing short of incredible," Duplantis said.
"He’s a killer and when he gets on the track that’s who he is. He talks a big game and backs it up and I think that’s what makes him more impressive," he added.
Duplantis claimed that he and Lyles have a lot in common with their main goal being transforming their respective sports. He added that being respected by Lyles is something he does not take for granted.
"We both have the same goal and I think we just want to keep pushing the sport for as much as we can. We both love competing, we both love winning and we both just love trying to do what we can to just fill in the spotlight. To be able to get a lot of respect from him is just makes it even more cool," Duplantis said.
"You're amazing" - Noah Lyles in awe of Mondo Duplantis following record-breaking performance at Paris Olympics
Noah Lyles was impressed by Mondo Duplantis following the latter's performance in the final of the men’s pole vault at the Paris Olympics.
Duplantis set a new world record, clearing 6.25m to win the gold and cement his place as one of the best pole vaulters in the world. As he spoke to the media following his record-breaking performance, Lyles gatecrashed the interview and gave Duplantis his flowers as he hugged him.
As quoted by Olympics.com, the three-time world 200m champion said:
"All-star, let’s go. You know this is the first time I ever got to see you attempt it in person. I love you man, you’re amazing."
Duplantis and Lyles have so far enjoyed their Olympic campaigns with Lyles chasing more history in the 200m and 4x100m relay. He won a bronze medal at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and has plans to improve on that this season.
On his part, Duplantis has continued his winning streak from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where he also won the gold.
The Swede has been successful at the World Championships as well, winning silver in 2019 and following that with gold medals in Eugene in 2022 and Budapest in 2023.
