Noah Lyles shared his feelings about whether his fiance Junelle Bromfield sacrificed her Paris Olympics campaign by taking care of him during the night he tested positive for COVID-19. The world champion competed nonetheless in the men's 200m on the following day and won a bronze medal.
Lyles started off his campaign in Paris in the men's 100m. After losing in the first two rounds, he came roaring back in the finals to win the gold medal by five thousandths of a second. However, a day after winning the 100m gold, the 27-year-old tested positive for COVID-19.
The two-time Olympian struggled with cough throughout the night and his fiance and Jamaican sprinter Junelle Bromfield, who were living together, had to sacrifice her sleep and take care of him.
"[Bromfield] had to keep moving me through the night [before the 200m final] to make sure I would stop coughing," Lyles admitted in the Netflix docuseries SPRINT.
When asked whether sacrificing sleep also meant she had sacrificed her Olympic Games for him, Lyles declined to answer, claiming it wasn't his story to tell.
“Unfortunately, that’s not my story to tell. One day, I hope she does," he told Guardian in an interview.
The 27-year-old added that he didn't want such an incident to happen in the first place and put the blame on governing bodies.
"It wasn’t a situation where we wanted it to happen. I’m not going say it could’ve been handled better, I’m just saying there were so many governing bodies that were involved where you would think it would be an easy situation to handle. But it turned into, well, we don’t want to be the issue here. A lot more hands got involved into the pot that we wanted to. I’ll just say that," Noah Lyles added.
Lyles was scheduled to compete in the 200m finals on the following day and went on to win a bronze medal while Bromfield finished last in her 400m semifinal heat and failed to qualify for the finals. She was part of Jamaica's 4x400m relay women's and mixed teams but failed to medal in both.
Noah Lyles supports fiance Junelle Bromfield amid online scrutiny
Noah Lyles' fiancee Junelle Bromfield came under heavy social media criticism earlier this year after the American sprinter claimed he had received some information about Jamaican athletes from her. However, Lyles stood strong behind her and gave 'her the flowers she deserved.'
The Olympic champion penned a heartfelt for the Jamaican on Instagram, writing:
"I just want to say how incredibly proud I am of my GF and give her the flowers she deserves now 💐. She has been through so much in her life that I could never imagine fighting through. Beyond that she is a survivor, 2x Olympian, Olympic medalists, Multi world championship medalist, and has been representing Jamaica on the world stage since she was 8 years old."
Noah Lyles further added that he was impressed with how Bromfield had dealt with 'hatred' from Jamaican fans.
"But the most impressive thing I’ve seen recently is how she’s dealt with the pure disrespect and hatred towards her from her own country. This woman has been attacked by people who have never met her, heard her name before, never seen her smile, or heard what she believes in. But she keeps moving forward knowing that God will always make a way. Thats why God keeps blessing her," Noah Lyles added.
The couple met through social media in 2017 and were friends for several years before dating in 2022. They exchanged engagement rings in October 2024 and are due for marriage in the near future.
