Following Coco Gauff's stunning victory at the 2024 WTA finals, Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles and skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin praised the young tennis star. The American tennis sensation defeated China’s Zheng Qinwen to earn the WTA title for the first time.
Gauff outclassed Qinwen on Saturday with a decisive lead of 3-6 6-4 7-6 (2) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to collect a staggering prize money of $4.8 million. At 20 years old, she became the youngest tennis player to win the tournament since Maria Sharapova exactly after 20 years.
The current World No.3 tennis player also became the youngest American since Serena Williams secured the title in 2001. The young tennis star defeated the World No.1 and World No.2, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek in the previous rounds to reach the finals.
While she bested Swiatek with 6-3 6-4 in the group stage, the American tennis star defeated the Belarusian tennis player in the semifinal 7-6 (4) 6-3 on Friday. Following her victory in the final round, she received a warm wish from American star sprinter Lyles. Gauff penned a heartwarming message on social media highlighting her feat.
"I know tend to focus on “doubters/haters” but this one is really for all of my supporters! Ya’ll held it down for me win or lose! I thank you for that. I see you and I appreciate you. And I know some of you are a little bit petty like me so it does feel nice to silence them for a bit."
Lyles graced the comment section and wrote:
"Congratulations."
The three-time Winter Olympic medalist Shiffrin reshared Gauff's post while adding a congratulatory emoji.
