Noah Lyles spoke about the lack of popularity of track and field as compared to other sports despite great performances in events. The American athlete revealed how the Netflix documentary series 'Sprint' will pioneer a major change for the sport by giving athletes a huge exposure.
Lyles has been in a quest to make track and field popular among the masses like the NBA and the NFL. The 27-year-old has been vocal about making the sport more fan-focussed and including several aspects from other successful sports leagues, which will intrigue the fans and keep the sport relevant all year. He also expressed that track loses its popularity except for major events like the World Championships or the Olympics.
Speaking about a solution for the above issue, Lyles expressed that the Netflix documentary Series 'Sprint' will bring about a major change and present athletes with great opportunities.
"I believe that the Netflix documentary is going to show our stories. It is going to share a point of view that is not seen very often. We have stars in our sport and these stars should be seen outside of the sporting world. They should be seen on Magazines, they should be seen at Red Carpet events, they have things to say and I am hoping that everybody gets to have that opportunity and I am hoping the same for me," she added.
Noah Lyles on his vision to reinvent track and field
Noah Lyles spoke about his vision to reinvent track and field in an interview with Olympics.com. The American athlete urged athletes to have a sense of unity and respect among each other to collaborate outside of the track.
“You look at our sport and we don’t even hang out with the athletes in our own sport. The big rock stars [from track & field] of our past and present don’t even hang out together. How can we get to this higher level that we all want to talk about and we aren’t even doing what’s needed to show that we respect each other?" he said.
Further, he spoke about generating interest in spectators who come to watch the sport and said:
“Where are we going to push people?” he asks rhetorically. “We need to push them back into track meets, get the energy and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, I want to be there for that moment'"
Noah Lyles envisioned bringing an electric atmosphere at meets so that the audience would remain entertained while also witnessing great performances on the track.
