Noah Lyles looked in cruise control at the London Diamond League as the world champion clocked a new personal best of 9.81s to win a stacked 100m contest. With less than a week before Paris Olympics start, Lyles is a favorite for the 100m gold and fans across the internet are expressing similar sentiments.
Lyles is a 200m specialist sprinter and holds the American record in the distance as well. However, the 100m has been his weaker section over the years, and he only made his name in the event in the last couple of years.
The 27-year-old won the World Championship in 2023 with a personal best of 9.83 but going into the Paris Olympics, he had never breached that mark until now. Lyles was feeling the pressure with Jamaica's Kishane Thompson emerging as a big threat to him after running a world-leading 9.77s.
As is always with Noah Lyles, he thrives in pressure and so he did to put himself back as the favorite for 100m gold at the Paris Olympics. After a quick start, he looked at ease through to the finish line, recording a time of 9.81s.
While Lyles’ performance has sent a new wave of excitement among track and field fans, several others are lauding him for backing his big claims with victories on the track.
"Noah lyles talks s*it 24/7, but he wins. Whether you like it or not, you have to respect his game," a fan wrote.
"Noah Lyles is getting better and better over the 100m, isn’t he? 9.81s is a new PB. It may not seem fast on paper, but he’s been winning big races against top 100m runners so that’s impressive. Let’s see what Jamaica’s 9.7 runners will throw at him in Paris," another fan wrote.
"Nobody runs that second half of a hundred like Noah Lyles. Man will walk you down like it's nothing," a user wrote.
The most notable thing in Lyles' performance was the ease with which not only just won, but clocked a new personal best, and that's been the most exciting for fans.
"Casual PR a week before Paris," a fan wrote.
"Mind you the 200 is Noah’s event…he just decided to take on the 100 last year and it’s already his. Now, double mind you, Usain Bolt went to the 100 because he basically had no chance in the 200….Noah has made the 100 and 200 his bitch," another fan commented.
"He heard all that shit y'all been saying," a user wrote.
Can Noah Lyles break his personal best again at the Paris Olympics?
Very likely. Noah Lyles will surely have to go sub 9.8s to win the 100m gold at the Paris Olympics 2024, and his performance at the London Diamond League indicated only one thing; Lyles has a lot more left in his tank.
The 27-year-old has been working on his blocks throughout this year and recorded personal bests over the 60m dashes twice earlier this year. The work on the blocks is paying handsomely for the world champion as he got off to a brilliant start in the British capital.
By the end of the 50m mark, Noah Lyles had sprung into the lead and it was an easy affair for him afterwards. With Zharnel Hughes, Ferdinand Omanyala, Akani Simbine, and Letsile Tebogo in contention, Lyles rose to the occasion amidst, and now despite Jamaica’s Krishane Thompson being a world leader with 9.77s, the American is a man to beat in Paris.
